Step 1: A Rescheck is a report generally in a printed or PDF format that is generated by the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) softwares Rescheck Web and Rescheck Desktop.
Step 2: Decide if you will use a paid Rescheck service or use Rescheck Web or Rescheck Desktop. If you choose to do it yourself the Rescheck software options are available free on the Department of Energy website. If you choose to use a Rescheck service you can now skip steps 3-12, and move to step 13.
Step 3: This is the information gathering portion of your project. For starters gather a full size set of blueprints for your project, your jobsite address, and your square footage. All this data will be entered on the Project Page of the Rescheck Desktop or Rescheck Web software.
Step 4: Now locate the roof system on your plans. The numbers that you need are the square footage of the roof system and the R value of the roof system. These will be entered on the Envelope section of Rescheck Web or Rescheck Desktop in the top row of items.
Step 5: Does your Rescheck project have any skylights? Add them to the roof system with the plus button and enter the U Value and SHGC of the skylight.
Step 6: Enter the walls to your project. Your project should generally have 4 walls. If it is an addition or odd shaped structure you might have 1, 2, or 3 walls. Every project is different. The information that is paramount is the square footage of each wall and the R value of each wall. Enter this in the row beneath your roof system and skylights of your Rescheck.
Step 7: Your doors on the structure come next. Only exterior doors that meet the outside air will be considered in your Rescheck. A closet door to a walk in closet would not be counted. An entry door or patio door would be entered. Decide if the door has a composition of 50%+ of glass or not. If so the door will be entered as a glass door on your Rescheck. You will need the SHGC and U value of the door as well. If it is a solid door then you will only need the U value.
Step 8: Enter your windows into Rescheck. You will need the square footages of each of your windows, the U Value, and the SHGC. Enter your windows into your Rescheck software into the appropriate walls systems.
Step 9: Enter your foundation. The basic options are basement, crawl space, subfloor, or a slab. Decide which type of foundation your Rescheck project has and enter it on the final row. It is possible your Rescheck may have more than one type of foundation. An example would be a home on a slab that also has a finished area over a garage. It would have a slab foundation and the conditioned area over the unconditioned garage would have an insulated subfloor. Enter this data into your Rescheck.
Step 10: Move to the Compliance tab on your Rescheck software and fill out each toggle option to the best of your knowledge.
Step 11: Click Check Compliance in the upper right hand side of Rescheck Web or Rescheck Desktop to see if your Rescheck passes or Rescheck fails. If it passes you are ready to move forward. If it fails you need to look at your components and their R values, U values, and SHGCs.
Step 12: When your Rescheck passes click Report in the upper right hand side of Rescheck Web or Rescheck Desktop. Then click the blue Continue button. Then click Yes. This will generate a PDF you can print, date, sign, and submit to your building inspector or building department. This will satisfy the Rescheck portion of your energy code.
Step 13: If you chose to hire a Rescheck service then email your PDF plans, jobsite address, and square footage to service@rescheck.info. We charge $79 to complete a Rescheck and it takes 4-6 hours.
